What a wonderful anniversary gift Carl! I'd be thrilled--as I am sure your mum was! You are right about old conventions being so funny--my mum wanted a different kind of wedding dress--she saw Audrey Hepburn in a movie in 1955-56 and Hepburn was wearing an off white wedding dress with a faint pink floral embroidered print (taboo back then)--so my mom had the same made for her wedding in 1957. Of course, it raised a lot of eyebrows--as any dress that wasn't pure white back then did--people talked more about the dress than anything else!
Great to see these conventions change--but the old ideas still hang on in some families. I was forced into the whole white dress thing with the train and veil-- I'd have given anything to wear a suit instead of a dress, especially since we had a winter wedding and it was freezing! I even had it in mind (if I had managed to get my way with the suit idea) to have the suit dyed after the wedding so I could continue to wear it as I never liked the idea of a one-time outfit that would end up boxed. Alas, the family won out (my mom was intransigent on the dress point) and I was stuck with the dress I didn't really want. Anyway, it was only for the day--seems silly now to have been upset about it then! But I must admit, I was happy to change into a suit after the ceremony because the dress seemed so formal and uncomfortable.
Well done for thinking of such an original anniversary gift. This was a fab project.. and lovely knitting work Zoe too! Best, Frances

I made my wedding dress myself, it looked a bit like my mums dress, it was a short above the knee lengts tight dress with a loose train, in the evening wore only the dress and a small jacket. It looked a lot like my mums only not with the fur...
I really am inspired to make a sindy doll in my mums wedding outfit, such a lovely idea....and maybe one in my own gown....
Thanks Carl!

Cheers Frances and Marijki.
Your Mums frocks sounded fabbie. Its funny how daughters get influenced by what their Mums want them to wear for their weddings. My eldest Sister was fortunate in that she did pick her own wedding dress, having it made from parts of several patterns. It was very of its time and very Dianaesque but she was a beautiful bride, but hence she wont show off her wedding photos these days. A woman i work with was also forced by her Mum to have the full white lace number in the early 70's when all she wanted was a quick register office do without the big frock and fuss.
Weddings are such a personal one day and everyone should be allowed to wear whatever they want be it simple or OTT.

Cheers Hannah and Anita.
Yes My Mum was so touched with her. She hadnt expected anything like it even thos i had asked her just before Christmas exactly what her top was like she had worn under her jacket. At the car boot when i was at Kevins at christmas i found an old rag of a jumper and paid 20p for it because it was just the material i was looking for. The woman on the stall couldnt believe i wanted to buy it as i think she had used it to wrap pottery in.

Dear Carl I think that this is one of the most moving stories I have ever read. It's not just that you have made this special momento for your mum, it's that she always wanted a wedding dress which really touches my soul. The fact that you have presented her this very individual gift must now raise the suit to a higher plane and your mum must realise that it was just as good as a frock..in fact far more stylish and less dated! It's a great pic of the parents too..great shoes worn by your dad! I'm going to make a Sindy replica of my wedding dress...but the thought of someone doing it for me as a suprise would be the ultimate accolade!! LOL Bronnie Hi I'm desperately trying to upload some pics of my clone doll in my wedding dress, but no joy. Anyone else having problems? Will try later. Bronnie x

I only just saw this thread.......what a lovely and kind person you are Carl...i suspect it made you just as happy presenting it to your mum. She must know how lucky she is to have a son that cares so much about her. I really dont think a brides dress is what matters but how you feel about each other. I didnt get married in a dress...not posting pics though i have long curly hair!! (my hair is a short short mary quant bob now with a sharp fringe, a million years away from my curly molton brown do!! ) My ma and dad were hippys they got married at Sheffield registry office with no shoes on! My mum wore a huge straw hat and my dad with his waist length hair..they are pics i treasure. My mum had a short 60's dress on. I love the wedding photo of your parents carl.....they are fab. Aaawwhh cheers 2 Nicki.
It was lovely to do and thanks again to Zoe whos excellant knitting skills helped to create it. I agree its not the most important thing a brides dress tho i guess like my Mum if its not what you really wanted you can spend years wishing if only. My Sisters and I personally think she looked lovely from her pics. Your own wedding and your parents sounded fabbie. The pics must be great. Aaaawwhh Nicki, long curls devine. Banish the straightners is my motto, says me who shaves his head every morning without fail.

Ha ha...Thanks Carl...Shave your head every morning?? Youre right thats more time consuming i think!! Why do you shave your hair any reason? Or do you just like the shaven look?
Carl i had long spirals..think Julia Ormond.....mad hair.
Im pretty lucky that i dont need to straighten unless im off out gallavanting..my parents are Irish (mum is half and half italian) so have the typical dak hair..my dad had almost Chinese hair it was so straight and Black...i have inherited that so thankfully dont need to burn it out with the hot rods!!
