Hi all, I am new, joined today and really love my Sindy doll. But today about an hour ago I had to take my wirehaired dachshund to the vet with possible milk fever. And she has 4 puppies which are nearly but not yet 4 weeks old. I have to start weening them and have no clue where to start?
Any suggestions will be sooooo welcome now!
Regards
Amalia

Welcome to the forum. I don't have your breed but have bred and reared puppies for 17 years - often rearing pups for others. Here is a page from my website which might help. bullywood.homestead.com/PUPPY.htmlThe principle of weaning is the same whatever the breed. Get yourself some goats milk in and a baby's bottle. I've just reared a litter of puppies whose mother went into premature labour and died. Its hard work doing it from day one but easy peasy from 4 weeks. Hope the mum gets better soon. I take it the vet has given calcium injections?

Hi Amalia Sorry to hear about your Pups and their Mother Sharie's advice should see you right though! Hope all of them pull through I've made a Sindy Introduction thread about you in Sindy Collector Introductions? It's a Basic Rule here that all new members should make that their first stop before posting on any of the other Boards of this Forum until they've done one, so I hope you'll stop by the one I've created for you and do an in depth Introduction next time you log in. ;D THANKS Anita xxx

We have in the past had a JR x Chihuahua puppy who we collected at 5 wks completely weaned as the mum had turned on the puppies. The bitch had had a csection, started attacking the puppies at 3 1/2 weeks , was taken away and held while the puppies fed. The breeder then gave up with this and insisted that we go and collect him at 5 wks. Health wise Gyp was fine and never had any problem with being weaned early, mentally he was a mess from being separated from his mum and siblings too early, and very hard work to house train and teach him respect for other dogs. He hadn't learnt anything from mum or even done the rough and tumble play fights with his siblings to teach him boundaries. You won't have those issues though and our dog never had any health problems after weaning early.

Maud most pups are fully weaned at 4weeks of age. At three weeks pups get very sharp teeth and poor mum is in agony. We've had plenty of c-sections and never had a single mother turn on her pups because of it. Some breeds do but this is always just after birth. Maud it sounds like the breeder just couldn't be bothered with feeding the pups and wanted rid of them very quickly!
