Hi, Im melissa Recently i found a few of my old Sindys in the loft and decided to have a browse on ebay to see if they were still around when i saw a sindy Ooak and was gobsmacked at how gorgeous it was, i really really wanted to buy it but thought how on earth do i explain to my hubby ive just bought a doll LOL so instead i thought im gonna give it a go myself, but theres no way i could attempt it on one of my original dolls so bought one really cheap to play around with, Hubby doesn't seem to have battered and eye so bought another one , i have the ideas but havnt done much yet just half a re-root to see how hard it is and of course thats led on to ooh well i did have that outfit so ill just get it again and maybe i should get a stand ....
As for the furniture nooo i refuse to go there but ooh the memories ;D Im pretty sure my Ooaks will be totally rubbish, totally in awe of what some of you have done with the dolls
So thats where i am now dying to make an Ooak and hoping when i do it slightly resembles the vision and not just a path of destruction

I know what you mean about fretting you'll destroy a doll, but I think if you take your time and read up lots you should be fine. There are brilliant websites and tutorials out there: retrodolls.co.uk for supplies mylittlecustoms.com for tutorials and supplies.
And there are always tons of helpful people like those around here to help!

Hi Melissa I enjoyed reading your post and like you would like to re-root. I am sure you will be fine I think that you will surprise yourself. I think there are also video's of how to do it on youtube. Good luck and I look forward to hearing how you get on.

Hi Melissa,
I know exactly what you mean. I too want to make my own OOAK, have even bought hair and have quite a few dolls but just don't have the nerve to try it out. Just can't choose a victim either. Am walking around with tons of ideas but how do I go about it.
I think we'll get there some day.
Wish you luck.

Good luck with your OOAK Melissa. I have only done 2 reroots so far, I needed glasses after I had finished them, my eyes have not been the same since.

Hi Melissa, I was the exact same. I was embarassed to tell my hubby i was buying dolls so i have hid them lol I bought my first one online a couple of weeks ago after seeing some boxed furniture in a charity shop earlier that day. I told him it was one of my old ones that i rescued from my 12 year old neice.....how bad is that??!! The rest are hidden until he stops teasing me about being a "nutter" I think that will be soon as he seems to just smirk and shake his head when he sees me on ebay or this forum. We have nothing to be ashamed about, its perfectly normal! Isn't it?? Anyway, be brave about your first re-root, just remember before and after pics for us Poppy x

Well does he have any collections himself?
My other half does the same thing, but has a longing to start making Airfix models. My fella also gets interested at the idea of making me a dollhouse - not that he wants me to have one but making it appeals to him.
There has to be a common ground with him on some nostagia he has too? Most guys seem to have it, be it to GI Joe, Action Man, models etc.

Hello Melissa and welcome! It won't be long until the furniture starts to appear! ;D I swore I wouldn't and now I'm looking at houses! It's very addictive. ;D
Poppy, I'm lucky as my hubby shares my passion (action men in his case, me too!) and all my children too so it's a real family affair, when we go out (to somewhere quiet, we're not THAT brave) we all take our figures..I'm sure it's quite a sight! ;D As Becca says you'll find some common ground somewhere and if not well you're having fun! and I'm sure he wouldn't want to deprive you of that, give him a bit of time to get used to the idea and good luck!

Thanks for the welcome Poppygirl 75 ;D ;D made me chuckle Smirkeybecca, wow if my hubby wanted to build me a dolls house i would have the parts ordered and in front of him within 24 hours I think as we get to be "big girls" and we shouldn't be playing with dolls, we give up something that we love, and i think thats part of the reason that some of us initially may be embarrassed to start collecting dolls but really we should never have stopped playing with them in the first place Now a couple of years ago i decided to get into scrapbooking and i spent a lot of money buying bits and bobs for it, even my hubby bought me stuff, But in a nutshell i was no good at it , it just never looked good, infact i think a child could have done better, The amount of stuff i have for the hobby that never happened is stupid so when i got excited about the Ooak sindys my hubbys reaction was Hmm just like your scrapbooking Hey !! so i think he just sees it as a whim and if my first one is a disaster it may very well be, He knows i would like to find a hobby that i stick to and can actually do, could this be it ;D ;D My other main hobby is gardening and luckily i can do that melissa x

Oh I look forward to seeing some Sindys posing in your garden then! I love gardening, but are far to busy for it and I have a bit of a "survival of the fittest" attitude which means I kill a lot of plants...

I'm a bit like poppygirl. I hid all my Sindy's as well. Still do actually. Have got quite a few out of the cupboard as one of my daughters has left home and I have now taken possession of her bedroom. Or at least my dolls have. He has sort of come to terms with my dolly hobby since Sophie came to visit. Before that I was able to keep it very low profile. Problem is now I keep buying 'orphans' from the local charity shop and he sort of has a problem with them. Thinks I will only have time for dolls and nothing else. I just love dolls and cannot bare to see them lying around dirty and tatty and just have to bring them home to wash and clothe them. Today I only bought one and last week I didn't buy one at all. (was very difficult). The real reason I visit the charity shop is hoping to find a Pedigree Sindy or anything Sindy related but that has not yet happened except for my Hasbro Talking Sindy. Still, I shall keep on dropping in and am now trying to restrain myself. (Did find 5 golf balls for 80 cents this morning )

Hi Melissa Welcome Hope that you've outed your collection by now!! LOL..... I wouldn't worry what anyone thinks about anything.... everyone has their odd quirks..... Go for it with the OOAK. Only thing I'd say (and I'm no expert) is try face painting over the original for the first time, get an idea of where everything lies on the face, then if you're feeling brave take everything off and re-do!! They really can look stunning when the're done. If a doll has good original face paint I'd leave it as it is though... Sounds exciting all the ideas you have, Look forward to seeing some! Good Luck!! Facepainting OMG i so would not dare even contemplate that. as i previously mentioned my scrapbooking was a disaster if i cant stick a photo on a page with a few bits of ribbon and make it look presentable giving me a paint brush is just asking for trouble LOL Lock your Sindys away and bar me buying them on Ebay ;D
