Poor Stumpy only had one arm. I had only just given him a nut (He takes them out of my hand) Then when I let my daughter out the back door to see her off for school, he was dead. I think he fell out of the tree.

That's such a sad story!!!! I bet you cried your eyes out. I would for sure... I recently barried a chipmunck with my kids. It was hit by a car.... It had a cross and a moment of silence and everything....

Thank you for all your kind words. I guess I am silly being sentimental over a wild creature but stumpy would come when I called him if he was in ear shot. My friends don't believe that you can call a squirrel but if he was within ear shot he would come running to my back door when I called "Stumpy! Nuts!" On occasions I have been calling to him up at the tree only to turn round and see him sitting on the wall next to me, if he could raise his eyebrows and tut I think he would. I don't have any pets other than Annette, David and James. (my kids) I haven't had any other pets since my Guinea Pig died when I was 15. Boo Hoo x

Aaahh how sad....
What did you do with Stumpy? I think squirrels are pretty intelligent he will have been your friend! You know, perhaps it may be one blessing to know that it must be really hard to bury/find his food if he only had one arm the poor thing..it would have been hard for him when in Winter...
Mr Nibbles the Hamster died this morning! Scarlet is devastated... its hard what to tell them she's only 4! Bless. xx

Ah Jill - how sad - I would have been in floods of tears! I remember taking a wild rabbit to the vet after we found it on the road having been knocked over. They couldn't do anything for him and put him to sleep. I cried on and off for days everytime I thought about the poor little thing! At least you gave him some friendship and a chance of survival - he would have died sooner cos of his one leg without your care. xx
Ah Nicki - I have all that to look forward to - Reuben turned 1 a couple of weeks ago and is starting to enjoy the fun of chasing our puss around the house! Cookie has a lovely big brush tail for Reuben to grab ! Cheers Janee xx

You say he would have had problems burying his nuts but he was still athletic and would jump from branch to branch. He would scramble head first down our 8 foot wall and come down the tree in the same manner. We had been friends for a couple of years he had already weathered 2 winters. The photographs show him waiting patiently at my back door. "Mum where's my nuts?" I don't know what I would have done if he was injured and not dead. I would hate to see him suffering. Sorry about Mr Nibbles x x

:)Aaaaawwhhh poor little tinker. So sad Jill. You will miss him loads. I've seen the passing of my gerbils, my rat, my budgie and my beloved Jack Russell named non other than 'Sindy' and her ashes are in a casket to this day on my mantlepiece surrounded by non other than her namesake. I still miss my pets no longer with me no matter how long ago its been. My Staffie Tara is around 10 now and i hope she's still got a good few years left with me.
Carl xx
